For our frame by frame we chose Le Youth's C O O L. This is a new song and it's video is pretty recent. We decided to go with this for our 1 minute fxf as it incorporates the use of a studio and I've not experienced using one of these before. It was fun tweaking the lighting, positioning the back drops and just general use of the studio. It was a more difficult than originally thought but I quite proud of the outcome! I love the use of black and white and I spent a lot of time matching up each frame with the original. I edited it so the original video plays in the corner of my own rendition of it in order to notice the similarities more simply.
Edited by myself, starring me, Jess and Henry.
Q1.What have you learnt about music video production from completing this task?
That making a 1 minute frame by frame of something that looks quite simple is simply quite difficult. There's a lot of preparation that goes on in order for something to look relevantly professional and I found that to achieve something similar to our fxf video we had to concentrate mainly on camera angle and positioning making sure we was always in frame and that the studio backdrop was not cutting off on the edges. In the original video there are some panning shots and quick close ups that we found tricky to shoot. After a few practice shots though we soon got the jist of most of what the video was asking us to copy. Another thing is that it doesn't take just 5 minutes to shoot 1 minute. This 1 minute frame by frame took us an hour to shoot and then another 3-4 hours for me to edit. Everything had to be precise and convincing and I think that was one of the most difficult parts - making it look like a music video. Another thing I've learnt it that lighting is very important. We had some trouble trying to get the studio lights to be bright enough thus my silhouette isn't quite as opaque as the original videos; which was disappointing.
Q2. How will this affect the planning of your music video?
I think this exercise has prepared me for a more realistic vision and expectation. From this I'll take into account the amount of time needed to perform well and execute professional camera skills and quality. For my real music video I want it to be similar to this set up where it's simplistic but effective. I think the main thing that has affected my planning is knowing how to edit in time with the music i.e. lip syncing, beat matching ect. Using the studio gave me the skills I need in order to manipulate lighting to my advantage and camera positioning and becoming comfortable in front of the camera. I think for my real video I'll be using the studio and green screen to perfect these skills more.
